Symphonic Spectacular Comes to Sydney!

Updated by Site Manager 16th December 2012

Well, the show last night was completely awesome. The orchestra, singers, sound and lights were all brilliant. My highlights were Abigail's Song and The Song Of Freedom. Alex Kingston was absolutely stunning, and I would have given a wrap for Mark Williams too if he had of given an autograph to my wife, or accepted a business card and ABC Whovians pen from her as he hurriedly left the Opera House after the show.

i would like to thank the many people who went to the trouble of dressing up in theme for the afternoon and evening performances, and who kindly allowed me to take their photos. I had to travel to Sydney, and won't be back to my computer until Monday night, but will upload all your photos then, but may be able to get some online today at an internet kiosk. It was wonderful meeting you all, Whovians really are the nicest bunch of people in the universe. Looking forward to meeting more of you outside the Opera House before this afternoon's show

Please leave all your comments, reviews, and stories relating to the event in the comments section of this blog page. You can upolad your pictures in our Symphonic Spectacular Gallery .

Arrived in Sydney, walking near opera house, might bump into sonic or tardis.

It was amazing! Sat up the back this time, and could see the whole orchestra. Only managed to take one photo before my lousy camera decided to break, unfortunately. Still, was definitely worth the effort to get down to Sydney.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. THEREFORE YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ IT IF YOU ARE ATTENDING A FUTURE PERFORMANCE

Well, yes, it was simply fantastic!

The atmosphere was certainly set before the concert began, on the steps outside the Opera House and in the foyer of the concert hall with fans dressed up as their favourite characters. There were the two Dalek girls, the boy with a gas mask and while lab coat ("Are you my mummy/"), a Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison") look-alike with a round straw hat on his head and stick of celery in his shirt pocket, lots of Fezzes (Fezzes were definitely cool last night), tweed jackets and bow ties. There were even a couple of girls dressed in short shorts and flannelette shirt who could have easily passed as the real Amy Pond in The Impossible Astronaut.

Then the show spectacular began. We knew that it was going to be something special when the voice of a Cyberman blurted across the concert hall that all mobile phones needed to be turned off. Anyone who dared to disobey would be deleted! The Judoon also boomed across the PA system warning people that it was against intergalactic law to take photographs or video footage of the performance.

The music was out of this world. The first half of the concert had the following pieces:

The Madman With A Box (Prologue)
I Am The Doctor
Amy
A Stitch in Time
Brianosaurus
Abigail's Song
The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe

Then came a 20-minute interval. We daren't be late in getting back to our seats before the start of the 2nd half of the show. The Supreme Commander of the Daleks made sure of that. He had taken over the Opera House public address system and commanded everyone to return to their seats otherwise they would be exterminated!

Musical pieces played in the second part of the concert were:

Battle in the Skies
The Majestic Tale of the Madman in the Box
Liz, Lizards, Vampires and Vincent
The Wedding of River Song
This is Gallifrey/Vale Decem
Pandorica Suite
The Final Chapter of Amelia Pond.

As everyone knows, the show was hosted by Alex Kingston (Professor River Song) and Mark Williams (Rory's Dad, Brian Williams). They were both consumate professionals on stage and kept us all enthralled at times when introducing musical pieces. Alex was simply delectable, Mark was witty and could easily be everybody's grandad. Both received rapturous applause as they walked onto the stage at the start and end of the concert, and deservedly so.

But Ben Foster and his orchestra were the real stars of the show. Apart from his great musical talents, Ben is quite a charcter on stage. His hand gestures, facial expressions and overall body language was just a joy to watch when commanded by the Daleks, the audience and his real boss to conduct musical pieces.

And who is Ben's boss? Murray Gold, the compose, of course. Murray was the surprise guest near the end of the show, who had the task of thanking the audience and everyone involved in the production. He also spear-headed the audience's call for an encore and we were treated to the following two encore pieces:

The Song of Freedom (I agree with the SM about this being the best piece of the night)
The Dr Who Theme (the original one).

The other stars of the show were, of course, the aliens. The Daleks, Cybermen, Silurians, The Ood, the Saturnynians, The Silence and the Judoon. All of whom were successful in terrorising the audience in various parts of the show. My only criticism is the absence of the Weeping Angels, although they did appear on the big screen. But I suppose there were safety concerns ... if Weeping Angels had been there, then we could have all become time-locked in history in some place like Manhatten.

The night ended with a standing ovation by the entire audience. Overall, Tardis001 gives this great show 6 Blue Boxes out of 5.

Oops, forgot to mention the vocalists who were simply awesome: Antoinette Halloran (soprano), Daniel Bonic-Goodwin (countertenor) and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Antoinette set the theme for night with her haunting rendition of the Madman in the Box (Prologue). Daniel was simply unbelievable in his renditions of Vale Decem and Song of Freedom. Both vocalists brought the house down and we should be very proud of these two Australian performers.

Despite our best efforts i didn't cross paths with sonic or tardis. Flat phone batteries, emails checked too late, along with me not getting around to printing up an ABC Whovians T shirt meant that none of us crossed paths. But with any luck we'll spot one of them, in the background of someone's photos
