Original Post: Posted 2nd January 2013 at 7.30 PM by Site Manager:

Over the last month ABC Whovians has been conducting a poll of visitors to our website on what their favourite Doctor Who stories are. I thank everyone who responded to the survey and am pleased to announce the results.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the clear favourite among poll respondents was Steven Moffat's series 3 episode "Blink", with more than half of those polled ranking it in their top ten. The number two spot was a pleasant surprise to me- The Classic Doctor Who story- "Genesis of the Daleks".

All in all, Classic Who stories took up 8 places in the Top 20, 3 stories from the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston), 5 from the 10th Doctor David Tennant and 4 from the current Doctor Matt Smith.

The top twenty as voted by you is as follows:

  1. Blink
  2. Genesis of the Daleks
  3. The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances
  4. Vincent and the Doctor
  5. Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead
  6. Asylum of the Daleks
  7. The Doctor's Wife
  8. The Talons of Weng-Chiang
  9. The Caves of Androzani
  10. Turn Left
  11. The Girl in the Fireplace
  12. Inferno (7 episodes)
  13. Dalek
  14. Pyramids of Mars
  15. The Girl Who Waited
  16. End of Time Part 1 and 2
  17. The Tomb of the Cybermen
  18. The Seeds of Doom
  19. Bad Wolf/ The Parting of the Ways
  20. City of Death
Despite publishing the results here, I have left the poll open, so if there are a significant number of new responses I will publish a new Top Twenty in a few months. Thanks again for voting, and as always you can discuss the poll results here or in the Doctor Who General Discussion thread.

Agree with most of the rankings here, but The Girl Who Waited, Asylum of the Daleks, and the End of Time? Seriously? Oh well.

I agree with the S.M. surprised at the number of Classic episodes that rated, the BBC must have sold more DVD's than I imagined.

As for The Girl Who Waited, it was probably the only episode that Karen Gillan really acted.

Have to agree with Photon that The Girl Who Waited was the only episode in which I thought Karen Gillan's acting was actually not bad.
It's an interesting list. I'm very surprised Asylum Of The Daleks rated so well.
I'm also surprised that Steven Moffatt episodes didn't rate better as he has a lot of fans here. Apart from Blink of course, which was brilliant.

Ah, well you all know I would have voted for Asylum of the Daleks. Quite pleased to see Turn Left in there, would've liked Fathers Day to have made it though.

The Girl Who Waited threw me (seriously?) as did Asylum of the Daleks and the End of Time (what is this, the Doc Who episodes I saw last week?) but other than that it's a pretty good list. I will note though that it priviledges DVD releases. Are other classic stories not there simply because they haven't been released yet?

I'm sorry to all the new series fans but it's almost embarrasing to see a story like Genesis of hte Daleks up there with some of the new series stories. It makes you realise, starkly, just how bad the writing is comparatively. I still think the (movie length reedited) version of the Curse of Fenric is the best episode ever but I guess most people only remember the broadcast version.

AoOne, I'm surprised you don't find The Curse of Fenric misogynistic. Two males (The Doctor and Fenric) using a defenceless female (Ace) as a pawn while in combat with each other. The Doctor shatters Ace's idolistic faith in him, but the Doctor's actions cured her fear of swimming . ;-)

(Tardis001 is feeling particularly mischievous upon his return from holidays)
