Posted by SonicR on January 13, 2013 at 2:10 AM

All Whovians, pay attention!

Culture Shock Events is hosting two Doctor Who conventions in April this year, one in Sydney and one in Brisbane. The current guests will include:

  • UPDATE! Janet Fielding - played Tegan Jovanka, companion of the 4th and 5th Doctors from 1980 to 1984.
  • Nicholas Briggs - voices many of the new series monsters, and has starred in and written several audio plays.
  • Frazer Hines - played the 2nd Doctor's companion Jamie from 1966 to 1969.
  • John Leeson - voiced the robot dog K9
  • Peter Davison - played the Fifth Doctor from 1981 to 1983
  • Colin Baker - played the Sixth Doctor from 1984 to 1986
  • Sylvester McCoy - played the Seventh Doctor from 1987 to 1989
  • Paul McGann - played the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 television movie

Yes, that's right, FOUR Doctors will be in Australia in a couple of months! For more information, head to the event's website, located here. Dates for the convention are: Sydney - April 7, Brisbane - April 14.

Tardis001 commented below that:

The Doctor Who Club of Australia is also running a 50th anniversary convention next weekend (22-24 February 2013) at the Bankstown Sports Club (Sydney). The guest celeb is Louise Jamieson, who played Leela in Classic Who in the early 1970s.

Weekend, VIP dinner and single day tickets are available. Details and tickets are available from the Whovention website: http://whovention.dwca.org.au.

Thanks for the info, Tardis!

Shame they couldn't get the other Mr Baker down here. Maybe they are being assembled down under for filming of a Multi doctor story?

It does seem rather unusual to have so many big names at this event, but I suppose it is the 50th anniversary year. Maybe there is something in your suggestion SM that a multi-Doctor story (or part of it) is being filmed in Australia (or New Zealand).

Maybe, but probably just a large amount of wishful thinking on my part. Would love to see some of any episode being filmed, but how special would it be if that episode was a multi doctor ep?

Matt smith says he will be seeing us down under soon (words to that effect in his Dr Who Symphonic Spectacular intro) and we have 4 docs here in April, and rumours on various UK newspaper sites say an eleven doctors special will be filmed lead me to the obvious conclusion that the Multi Doctor Story will indeed be filmed here! (If I say it enough will it come true?)

Am I correct to say Tegan was the Australian companion?

Yikes! Just saw the cost - $120.
So can anyone tell me what actually happens at these things that I would want spend that sort of money on an entrance.
I've already seen the shows, I'm not going to talk to the stars or get autographs. So what is left? Is it just people selling stuff?
Sorry to be ignorant but I've never been to any convention before. I don't even go to the show /ekka cause I'm too cheap, and hate both lines and crowds.

I guess I'm supposed to tell you all the reasons why you should go but I'm afraid I have to agree. I mean, if you got a preview screening of an upcoming episode, and maybe have Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, or maybe even (sorry Colin) the more popular Baker, it might be worth it. But to expect people to pay that much without even providing a program for the event on the website is a bit steep.
But maybe I'm a bit stingy too. Over to you Sonic.

Hi, I'm a whovian and I would love to join this doctor who website to find out the latest news about it. Now I live in Australia and I'm having difficulty finding conventions. Can you help.

Admittedly, I'm not that familiar with conventions myself, but the website I use to find DW conventions is CultureShockEvents. The Whovention website can also be quite useful, as is a quick google search. Both website's URLs are in the blog post above.
