Who was the "woman in the shop" who gave Clara the number to call the Tardis in "The Bells of St John"?

If Rose is set to return, she has precedence for connecting companions with Doctors.

And "best helpline in the universe" sounds like something Rose would say as well, to me at least.

River Song is the obvious choice. The character is known to appear later on in Series 7.

Einna25's suggestion that it is Rose is plausible too. In a recent interview, Jenna Louise-Coleman said that the finale to Series 7 leads straight into the 50th anniversary special. We know that Rose is in the special, so that's a good reason for her to also have some involvement in the lead-up to it.

Another possibility is that it is Clara from another time. If Oswin Oswald was splintered in space and time after the Asylum of the Daleks exploded, then the Clara we saw last night and the "woman in the shop" may be two different splinters of Oswin.

My first thought is that it was Clara herself, and I'm sticking with it.

Actually, I've now changed my mind. I now think it could be Victoria Waterfield, one of the companions of the 2nd Doctor.

Victoria was originally from the Victorian Era, just like Clara Oswin in the 2012 Christmas Special. She encountered the Daleks (in The Evil of the Daleks) and the Great Intelligence (in The Web of Fear). Clara has also encountered both of these aliens.

The Doctor finally left Victoria in the care of foster parents, Maggie and Frank Harris, in the 20th Century (Fury of the Deep). According to the spinoff Dr Who novel, Birthright, the Great Intelligence manipulated the 20th Century Victoria to establish New World University, preparing the way for it to invade the Earth's computer networks. What if Victoria now realises that she was being manipulated and so recruits Clara to help her to defeat the Great Intelligence?

I actually like this idea because it connects New Who with Classic Who.

Rose used to work in a shop, as did Martha in Blink. Both had the TARDIS' number.

This is an amazing idea!! I would love if it was correct!! :D

However I have a bit of a problem with the whole phone concept in general... isn't the Tardis Phone on the inside???
Do I not remember specifically the Ninth Doctor saying that the phone on the outside of the Tardis isn't connected to anything?

The TARDIS has been renovated. Perhaps the outside phone has become operational since those renovations.

Martha didn't work in a shop in Blink. It was Sally Sparrow. I thought of her first but dismissed it because she didn't have the doctor's phone number. She told the doctor to have the transcripts with him when he would be touched by an angel.

Woman in the shop? I think it was either Rose or River.

River Song.
I still think it was River Song, but it could be Missy.

If I was trying to guess the "right" answer I would choose Missy. Not that I know who Missy is, except that she is Missy.
But I so wish it was Victoria Waterfield, seriously how good would that be! How clever you are Tardis001 to think of it.
I think River is the next predictable "right" choice, but it feels a little too obvious, so maybe that leaves another Clara life as it often seems to me that Mr Moffat favours his creations & his story lines over all the ones that came before. Which I suppose is fair enough, maybe he is being respectful to past story lines by not adding layers.

The whole thing reminds me a little of the intersection of Amy's pregnancy storyline and the impossible astronaut child. So the Doctor and Amy find a child trapped in an astronaut suit and do they investigate? Nope it's so far down the list of priorities it doesn't really even get mentioned again until it turns out to be so very important to the whole season story arc. I'm wondering if the phone call re the Woman in the Shop will turn out the same way. So very important to the season story arc but somehow nobody bothers to look into it. It's getting a bit old.
