Scientists across the world are giddy at the prospect that the final piece in the puzzle emerging from Einstein's theory of general relativity will fall into place on Friday. Every single prediction from Einstein's 1915 theory has been proven by direct experimental evidence - except one: the existence of gravitational waves. We could be just hours away from their confirmation.

I think this involves lots of Timey Wimey stuff ......... Einstein's gravitational waves directly observed for the first time by LIGO scientists. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-12/first-direct-evidence-of-gravitational-waves-detected/7140750

Some terrific photography .Hyenas are much bigger than I used to think they were and I've seen a film of one tackling a lioness alone although the rest soon appeared to help. Wonderful to have that almost on your doorstep.

'Time to say goodbye' to comet probe Philae: space agency. Ground controllers say they will stop sending commands to comet probe Philae, announcing it is "time to say goodbye" to the robot lab resting after a captivating science mission. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-13/space-agency-says-goodbye-to-comet-lander-philae/7165456

If its not caused by CSG drilling I will be very surprised. I look forward to hearing Barnaby's response to this report.

Camera traps have revolutionised surveys of animal populations, particularly over the last 5 or so years. They're extremely good at detecting species that are normally display very secretive behaviours. My research group uses motion-sensor cameras all the time, but it is a real challenge to keep up with changes in technology. We use Reconyx PC900 cameras, which take colour photos in daylight, infrared photos at night, have a trigger delay response of 0.2 second, and can be programmed to take up to 5 photos/second. The rapid camera response time is important for picking up fast animal movements (e.g. a bird or a small bat flying past the camera lens). The key to using these sorts of cameras is having a SID card large enough to store all the digital data and batteries that have enough power for optimum camera activity. Motion-sensor cameras are usually left in an area for 2 or 3 weeks at a time when surveying animal populations and during that time 10,000s of photos may be snapped. Many photos turn out to be duds, but a few turn out to be real gems.
