The heat from an atomic bomb is thermal energy, which is around 30-40% of the bomb's total blast energy, so the story is a little misleading from that perspective. It would have been more accurate to have said the heating of the ocean is equivalent to the thermal energy of one atomic bomb/second or the total energy of one atomic bomb every 2.5 to 3.3 seconds.  But it is still a lot of heat.
