Peter Dutton is using citizenship laws to campaign for Liberal leadership, Labor says.

Labor has accused the immigration minister, Peter Dutton, of using changes to Australia’s citizenship laws as a campaign for the Liberal leadership and has confirmed it will oppose the package.

The Labor caucus on Tuesday morning signed off on a recommendation to block the government’s citizenship changes, which the shadow minister for citizenship and multiculturalism, Tony Burke, described as a “massive overreach”.

I agree with them, Dutton’s changes require migrants passing a University Leave English test that many Australian born people would fail.

This is Peter Dutton trying to look macho & tough.

By the time this is enacted and migrants wait four years for citizenship they'll pass the English test no bother, so many more tertiary educated people's grammar is getting worse by the day. Even some academics and politicians are guilty of the same mistakes.

Is this a disguised advertisement on the ABC ?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-20/living-with-narcolepsy-aaron-just-could-not-stay-awake/8460500

More like a plea to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

No way would I swap places with that bloke.  :(

Read the whole article and you’ll see what I mean.

Well, I did read the whole article before I posted it , which is when I noticed the brand name of the drug at the end.

The fellow is in a bad way, but there must be lots like him suffering other diseases, are we going to get all the available drugs listed ?

I can't help feeling that Guthrie is commercialising the ABC by stealth and it would be interesting to know if any money accrued to the ABC from running that story.

If that is what happened, Michelle Guthrie should be sacked, no ifs or buts.

To be honest, I don't have any problem with the story being run on ABC media. Sad to admit it, but it is a human interest story and, like Rumpy said, I'd hate to be in that guy's shoes, or those of his family.  The fact that the report named the product is neither here nor there, because there are probably no other medicines that could do the job.  If the story helps a few very unwell individuals to afford the medication by it being placed on the PBS, then I'm all for the medicine being named.

If it's altruistic, fine, if a commercial relationship exists then that is not in the ABC's charter.

Sophie Scott is a respected medical journalist at the ABC and I doubt that she would be promoting a commercial relationship.  I think it is important to point out that the article goes to great lengths to point out that it is the mother of the afflicted young man who is lobbying for the drug to be availlable in Australia and for it to be placed on the PBS. This is different to an ABC employee (in this case the ABC medical reporter) going into bat for the company.  It's no different to an Australian politician being interviewed and saying "You should vote for my party because ..."

Australia’s Liberal party has launched a new website that it says will help seduce swing voters its way and challenge rival campaigning organisations such as Getup!

The acting Liberal party director, Andrew Bragg, launched “The Fair Go” website on Saturday, which is operated by the party.

Bragg used his speech to the party’s federal council as a call to arms to modernise or perish. He said the party had to deal with a “cashed up cabal” of opposition to its interests.

“The Fair Go” website will take aim at organisations such as Getup!, which have developed effective digital campaigns while the party has lagged behind.

A number of Guardian readers commented the the Liberal Party and Fair Go sounds like a mismatch.

What do you think?

The two major parties are engaged in class warfare representing their own narrow interests and I'm not going to listen to either of them until they start getting back to supporting the average person. So the Libs can stick their Fair Go website anywhere they like , I'm not going to read it and I hope it goes the same way as Labor's site.

I've been meaning to post this for the last few days, but I've only got round to doing it today.  The other day on local ABC Radio, Samuel West was interviewed about his Museum of Failures in Sweden. Samuel was tired of going to other museums and seeing the best of everything. So he set up a museum of failed inventions or ideas.  I think the concept is great!  Here are some of the artefacts in the museum:

“Prime Minister Turnbull has maintained a strong non-discriminatory immigration program helping to make Australia a land of opportunity for peoples from all around the world,” the Policy Exchange said.

It could have been worse, it could have been Peter Dutton who received the prize.

A Conservative think tank giving a prize to a Conservative is no surprise.

I’m sure the fact that the UK and Australian governments are laying the ground work for a Post Brexit Trade Deal has something to do with Mal’s award.  :/

Yes, I'm sure you're right.  If Theresa May survives as PM long enough to visit Australia, I'm sure that she will be offered an IPA prize for homeland security.   :/
