On a side issue, SMH readers can comment on this story and others, but the ABC has removed readers comments from pretty well all of its online stories as well as "The Drum" online. So it looks to me that the ABC is now an instrument of supression rather than an instrument of free speech. Very disappointing.

I'm afraid that this ABC self censorship was expected when Michelle Guthrie took over from Mark Scott. After all can we expect better from a former Murdoch employee.

Pauline Hanson rails against 'reverse racism' as Senate debates free speech – politics live. " Reverse Racism " ???? Is that not recognising the devine right of White Anglo people to rule the earth ?

'The ABC is letting Australia down': Paul Keating slams the national broadcaster. Former prime minister Paul Keating is the latest public figure to lay into the besieged ABC, saying it is failing as a news gathering organisation and was letting Australia down. The ABC news covered too many tragic reports of no broader consequence, and the 7.30 current affairs program broadcast "too many hard-luck stories", he said. " In the case of the ABC news, if you want to watch a good news service, watch SBS news, which tells you what's happening in Iraq, what's happening in the US election, what's happening with Donald Trump," Mr Keating said. "In the case of the 7.30 Report it is a news magazine, instead of a hard news-breaking operation." Mr Keating was speaking at Melbourne University on Friday, where he was asked whether he agreed with indigenous leader Noel Pearson, who this week accused the ABC of being "the country's miserable, racist national broadcaster: a spittoon's worth of perverse people willing the wretched to fail". "What you get on the ABC is: 'A truck has just overturned on the Pacific Highway'. It's like in the 1970s. The ABC is letting Australia down in terms of news presentation." Is Paul Keating genuine in his critism of the ABC ? Check out the SMH readers comments ....................................

Yes, I think Paul has a point. There is not enough analysis stories by the ABC on mainstream issues, ie the quality of services etc, and there is to much trivia ; eg http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-23/how-to-become-a-lego-artist-ryan-mcnaught/8046996 http://www.abc.net.au/tv/goodgame/stories/s4579314.htm http://www.australiaplus.com/international/in-person/diverse-stories-in-australian-hip-hop/8053320 http://doublej.net.au/news/features/5-unforgettable-musical-moments-from-the-sydney-opera-house

He is right. 7:30 Report is more like A Current Affairs. I blame TA and the new CEO. The ABC is less critical, they now report non-consequential events.

Morrison was on tv this morning full of righteous indignation in attacking the Labor part for being "economic vandals" in not supporting his backpacker tax .
How full of bull is he ? This tax will raise about $100 million a year when HIS deficit is $30 billion a year. We are hardly going to have a backpacker led recovery of the economy are we ?
This government should stop nibbling around the margins and get down to some real heavy lifting. Cut out Howard's middle class welfare (negative gearing, superannuation rorts etc) instead of focussing on minutiae. They really are hopeless.

Senator David Leyonhjelm is feeling media deprivation again. He's ranting about the ABC and SBS hiding behind a “goat’s cheese curtain” what ever the hell that is ! I assume that there is a competion on the cross-bench, to see who can create the most bizare statements.

I don't know what he means by "goat's cheese curtain", but I think that ABC and SBS holding open board meetings is a good idea. I also think that a certain number of board positions should be reserved for "lay people", ie ordinary viewers instead of high flying executives, and also more staff board members (I think there is only one now).

There are Nine People listed as ABC Board Members: http://about.abc.net.au/profile/michelle-guthrie/, Except for one Staff Appointment, Journalist Matt Peacock they have backgrounds in Big Business, Legal / Academic professions. Some other people with backgrounds in Small Business, Secondary Education, etc would be nice. Provided that they polically neutral, No party hacks of religous fanactics. So the selection panel will have to have a broad range of view points.

As we are in effective the shareholders, we should be able to vote for the Board members, who would have to put up their experience and interests online for us to peruse and decide. Democracy at work !

Sounds like the pressure is getting to Malcolm ..................... Malcolm Turnbull has hit out at conservative commentators who have criticised the large number of concessions the government made on its bill for a tougher building industry regulator, labelling them “armchair critics”.

Brenda has some great ideas. I'd change one, the increased salary instead of entitlements. I think they should use their own money to travel and hand in receipts on return as proof of where they went and why. I'm sure this would limit $5000 flights and some unnecessary "study tours", especially in this digital age when so much can be done by videolink etc.

Very good article. They way we give away our gas is disgusting. Put an export tax on it and return the proceeds to domestic consumers.

SMH reader's comment that caught my attention: Gee willakers I do hope they leave The Drum intact. The ABC just wouldn't be the same ABC without that nice Mr Berg from the IPA to explain how FTAs are really Foreign Aid.
