SJ4 has raised a good point about The Monks and their powers.

Maybe their power is Hypnotic.

Perhaps this whole scenario is an illusion created in the minds of the Monks.

That would more easily explain them transporting a nuclear submarine over thousands of miles of dry land.

Maybe they are a group of Rogue Time Lords, the return of The Master a villain well known for using hypnotism lends weight to this theory.

What do you think?

The Timelirds aren't supposed to meddle in others affairs are they? That would explain why they needed consent. But it doesn't explain why they needed to do a simulation of earth. The Timelords could just use time travel to see how events would play out

It seems some of our regular commenters have gone missing. Was their consent not pure?

I recorded it and will watch it later. I listened to it though and it sounded interesting.

I think you might be onto something there Photon - the Monks are very mystical  so mind control could explain a few things.

I am afraid that having watched more and more of the Classics - the Tenth Planet being the last - I do appreciate a solid story line which has some smattering of common sense and logic to it.

And is it just me or did the Doctor working out exactly the cause of the End of the World in, what three lines, seemed just a tad convenient in terms of wrapping up the story line so quickly as the episode hurtled towards its conclusion...I mean GM bugs getting loose - a bit pedestrian really.

Now wouldn't it have been far more fun if the real threat was an imminent alien invasion by a previously unknown race of beings which had been homing in on a long running SETI transmission caused by well meaning scientists with the Earth potentially in the cross hairs of the battle betwen the Monks and the other alien race. Now that would have been a real twist!! :)

I quite liked the GM bug end of the world scenario, but you are right- The Doctor working it out was a bit unrealistic, however clever he is.

Hello SJ4.

I like your idea about aliens homing in on SETI transmissions reminds me of something that Stephen Hawking wrote a while back.

I was wondering whether they were still in a simulation too.

As for who the Monks are, I'm not sure, although the cybermen are pretty good at wanting to take over the Earth :-)
Usually they just want bodies to upgrade, but they are not known for requiring consent.

I'm actually thinking that in order to "save" mankind from their awful fate The Monks have simply transferred everyone's consciousness into a different simulation- where the Monks rule the world- and in the meantime The Monks harvest the Earth of its useful resources.

Mmm. I like that idea SM. Smatterings of the Gallifreyian Hard Drive used to store the souls of the departed prior to their conversion into cybermen.

I like that as a theory, SM !. Although if we get to the stage of having simulations within simulations - I will need to have a lie down :-)

And the latest odds on the new Doctor are;

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the new even-money favourite to be the next Doctor Who, following a flurry of bets on Monday evening placed on the Fleabag and Broadchurch star.

Having been considered an 8/1 outsider last night, she’s now ahead of long-time favourite Kris Marshall, whose odds have drifted slightly from 6/4 to 3/1 overnight.

Waller-Bridge finds herself on the BAFTA Breakthrough Talent shortlist, which helps explain why so many have lumped on her to succeed outgoing Time Lord Peter Capaldi.

This is just the latest twist in a market which has so far had several frontrunners – both male and female – although this is the shortest price any female has been to get the role.

And she’s well ahead of Broadchurch pal Olivia Colman who, despite being as short as 4/1 back in February, is now a 12/1 shot.

Tilda Swinton has also headed this market at one stage, although she’s been on the drift of late too, and now finds herself out at 10/1.

That means Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s nearest rivals are Kris Marshall and David Harewood (5/1)

Ladbrokes Latest Betting

Next Doctor Who

Phoebe Waller-Bridge – Evens

Kris Marshall – 3/1

David Harewood – 5/1

Tilda Swinton – 10/1

Olivia Colman – 12/1

Maxine Peake – 12/1

Andrew Buchan – 16/1

:):)

I thought Andrew Buchan would make a good Doctor after seeing him in 'The Last Dragonslayer' (based on the Jasper Fforde book). Completely different to his character in Broadchurch.

Well not long to go now before Sunday nights episode - I hope it draws all of the threads together and makes some kind of sense! :)

Meanwhile I am on the hunt for some genuine Dr Who memorabilia to add to my small but slowly growing collection. I understand there are some good websites in the UK so might try those - anything from Tom Bakers era would do nicely...

You can get a pattern for Tom's scarf online. You could knit one for yourself SarahJane4ever. :)

Well as it turns out I already have one...my Mother knitted me one when I was about 12...still have it in the closet somewhere..:)

Nope, I think I might build a full size version of the Tardis and put that in the garden instead. It will make a nice talking point for the neighbours. :):)
